Final day of the Premier League 13/14
It was the final weekend of the 13/14 Premier League season came along on Sunday 11th May as all the Premier League teams played at the same time of 3pm. The main focus on the day was between Liverpool and Manchester City, who both could come away with the title dependent on results.
West Bromwich Albion vs Stoke City
Stoke city secured their highest Premier League finish this season as a victory placed them into 9th place ahead of Newcastle. Mathematically, West Bromwich could have been relegated if Norwich was to win against Arsenal by at least scored 17 goals, but in reality West Bromwich were safe for another season. Stoke grabbed the lead in the match as a well-placed cross was deflected into the net by West Bromwich‘s McAuley. However an equalizer in the second half by Sessegnon put more pressure onto Stoke City as they had to play the last quarter of the game all tied up. But a late 87th minute goal was produced by Stoke as Adam‘s low driven shot found its way into the corner of the net. The victory helped Stoke record their highest placed finish.
The final score was West Bromwich Albion 1 – 2 Stoke City.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
Another nothing game in the league came between Tottenham and Aston Villa. Aston Villa is safe for another season as they cannot be relegated and Tottenham couldn’t push for a 5th place finish as Everton had a much better goal difference. But an entertaining match for Spurs fans was at hand at White Hart Lane. It wasn’t the best season for Tottenham, but with three first half goals it was a strong performance to seal the 6th place in the table. The first goal came from Paulinho who pounced on a rebound to put the Spurs into the lead. Not long after a second goal for Spurs came along, Danny Rose drove the ball to the near post which found Aston Villa defender Baker; He sadly put the ball into his own net as he was pressured by Adebayor. Two minutes after the own goal Agbonlahor handled the ball in the penalty area stopping a long range effort from Sandro, a penalty was awarded and Adebayor converted the spot kick to make it 3 – 0 to Tottenham. Not much happened in the second half as both teams had chances to convert but couldn’t.
The final score was Tottenham Hotspur 3 – 0 Aston Villa.
Sunderland vs Swansea City
The last few games of the season were vital for Sunderland as they were set to be relegated to the Championship, but an amazing run from the club allowed them to stay in the Premier League for another season. Swansea on the other hand have not had the greatest season but finished up mid-table. Kicking off the goals, Swansea were the first to enter the score sheet as Dyer latched onto a well-placed pass from Routledge to calmly lift the ball over the top of the Sunderland goalkeeper. Seven minutes after in the 14th minute, Wilfred Bony played the ball into Emnes and with an effortless turn he smashed the ball into the back of the net. The final two goals came in the second half as Borini of Sunderland converted a chance in the 50th minute, but Bony sealed the victory for Swansea with a goal 4 minutes later.
Swansea City were victorious with a 3 – 1 win over Sunderland.
Southampton vs Manchester United
Southampton finished an amazing season with a draw against Manchester United on the final day of the Premier league. It wasn’t the best game of football from the weekend but I was a game that showed the class in which Lallana and Shaw have and why they should be in the England squad coming up to the world cup. The first goal could be debated but it still stood in the end as Rickie Lambert smashed in a goal after accidentally elbowing Vidic in the face. United players and fans believe it shouldn’t have stood but it was a hard decision to make. But in the second half, it was Juan Mata who equalised the match with an amazing free kick finish. It hasn’t been the best season for United as they saw their manager get the sack and a run of very poor performances but a new season will help United build the squad they need.
The final score at St. Mary’s was Southampton 1 – 1 Manchester United.
Norwich City vs Arsenal
It would take a miracle for Norwich to survive relegation but it sadly didn’t happen as Arsenal confirmed this with two second half goals. Not much was happening in the first half of the match as both teams had chances but couldn’t make anything out of them, but the second half saw Arsenal come out with two goals. Ramsey was the first to score on the 53rd minute as his volley found the net. Nine minutes later Arsenal stuck again as Jenkinson sealed the win for his club along with getting his first goal too. The main thing in all of arsenal players and staff’s minds will be the final of the FA Cup as it is a chance of winning some silverware and a comfortable victory against Norwich will help them build for the next weeks match.
The final score was Norwich 0 – 2 Arsenal. This saw Norwich sadly relegated into the Championship.
Fulham vs Crystal Palace
Despite Fulham already being relegated and Palace finishing in middle of the table, a last minute goal saw Fulham snatch a draw to end the season. An amazing performance from Palace youngster Gayle nearly seal a victory but David of Fulham snatch the draw. Gayle put the visitors into the lead in the 28th minute and with Palace looking strong it looked to be a very sad ending for Fulham. But the second half saw Fulham bounce back and Woodrow equalised in the 61st minute. Coming to the end of the game Gayle cam back to put his side back into the lead but as mentioned a last minute goal from substitute David saw Fulham finish of the premier league season with a draw.
The match ended Fulham 2 – 2 Crystal Palace.
Hull City vs Everton
Everton cruised to a 2 – 0 victory over Hull City as Romelu Lukaku signed off in style with a second half goal for Everton. No doubt that Hull city had their sights on the Cup final but Everton outplayed Hull to finish off yet another great season. McCarthy was the first to strike as he found the net only 9 minutes into the game. But to finish off an amazing season, Lukaku came out the block in the second half to score yet another goal for Everton only 1 minute into the half. With a great season for Everton they will now play Europa League football next season. Hull City has still got a chance of a trophy as they face up against Arsenal in the FA Cup final.
The final score between the two sides was Hull City 0 – 2 Everton.
Cardiff City vs Chelsea
Despite already being relegated in the Championship, Cardiff City came out of the blocks to stun Chelsea fans and players as they opened up the scoring 15 minutes into the first half. Craig Bellamy’s strike found the back of the Chelsea net as it took a deflection. Cardiff were able to hold off any chances that Chelsea had but after coming back to play the second substitute Schurrle proved too much to cope with as he found the net in the 72nd minute. Not long after it was Torres who put the visitors into the lead with his first league goal since January. The match between the two sides didn’t really matter as both teams couldn’t do much more with their season, but a victory for Chelsea confirmed the 3rd place in the league.
The final score was Cardiff City 1 – 2 Chelsea.
Liverpool vs Newcastle
Liverpool faced up against Newcastle in their final game of the season which could potentially see if they were league champions. Liverpool needed to win their final game of the season alongside Manchester City loosing against West Ham. But Liverpool fans would have thought the fight was over as Skrtel put the ball into his own net 20 minutes into the first half. With a win in the sights of the Liverpool players the second half was crucial and with two second half goals Liverpool got that all important win they needed. Agger’s volley from a Gerrard cross found the net in the 63rd minute and to seal the victory for Liverpool, Sturridge converted his chance only 2 minutes after Agger’s goal. The victory for Liverpool was not enough however as Manchester City had sealed the title with a win against West Ham.
The final score at Anfield was Liverpool 2 – 1 Newcastle.
Manchester City vs West Ham
Only needing one point from the game, Manchester City were only 90 minutes away from becoming champions of the Premier League. And it was a great day for the Man City Skipper as he led his side to become the champions with a two goal victory over West Ham. It was a very comfortable victory for the Champions as West Ham struggled to find the back of net and with a first half goal from Nasri in the 39th minute; it put a lot of belief in the City side to go on and confirm the victory. Going into the second half one goal ahead, it only took Kompany four minutes to seal the victory by lashing home from six yards out. This victory guaranteed the title and a side that has played some amazing football lifted the trophy up.
The final score was 2 – 0 to the Champions of the Premier League.
