Top 5 long range goals
After Aaron Ramsey’s amazing rocket of a goal against Galatasaray on Champions League Week 14 we thought we’d compile our list of the best long range goals. However distance isn’t only the criteria here, accuracy, technique and power are all essential parts in executing the perfect long range goal.
5. Tim Howard vs Bolton
Tim Howard’s became only the 4th goalkeeper to score in Premier League History when he cleared a back pass from inside his own area and it somehow evaded everyone on the pitch and bounced over Bolton Keeper Adam Bogdan and into the net. He later described the goal as “cruel” and refused to celebrate the goal out of sympathy for his opposite number.
Ronaldo had to pop up sooner or later didn’t he? This rocket of a goal happened in the Champions League campaign of 08/09. After receiving a short pass from Anderson, he turned, took a touch and unleashed an unstoppable shot which flew past the Porto goalkeeper Helton Arruda. This goal would send them through to a semi-final showdown with Arsenal but ultimately it would not be Man Utd’s year as they lost in the final to Barcelona.
3. Hakan Calhanoglu vs Borussia Dortmund
This cracking free kick from 41 metres out happened during the 2013-2014 bundersliga season as Hamburg were looking to end a 7 game losing streak against high flying Dortmund. The match ended 3-0 to Hamburg and their 3rd goal was a peach of a free kick which swerved in the air and deceived Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller.
2. Wayne Rooney vs West Ham United
Next up on our list is the England Captain Wayne Rooney, after a clearance by Ashley Young, Rooney then shrugged off a defender and half volleyed a beaut of a strike from just inside the halfway line. A goal which combines power, accuracy and pure audacity resulted in one of the best strikes seen in the Premier League to date.
1. Roberto Carlos vs France
This almost unbelievable long range shot from Roberto Carlos happened during the 1997 tournament, Le Tournoi. A Brazil side, boasting world class talents such as Ronaldo, Romario, Cafu and Roberto Carlos, had just won a free kick after Romario was flattened. Carlos then unleashed one of the most mind boggling goals ever seen with an insane amount of swerve on the ball.
